Location Recording

Location recording allows high-quality recordings to be captured wherever you want to be - Not just in a recording studio.

What excites me most about this approach is finding the environment that suits you and your material so we capture you performing at your absolute best.

Perhaps you would like to perform in (and capture) a large natural acoustic space. Or maybe your band performs at their best in your rehearsal space (which happens to be your lounge).

You may want to shoot a video of a live acoustic performance in a picturesque remote location one afternoon. Or perhaps you like the idea of booking a bach in the hills to hunker down on that new EP for a few days.

Location Recording is also perfect for capturing unamplified performances including chamber, choral or orchestral music; theatre or kapa haka.

However if your performances are amplified and you perform best with an audience, why not consider live recording your next show.

Recording Venues

There are numerous venues that are suitable for recording various styles of music.

NCMA's School Of Music Auditorium, Recital Theatre or Bob Bickerton's Todd Bush Recording Studio are just three such spaces - each offering a unique acoustic that suit different musical styles.

It is also possible to record in a location that isn't a 'venue'.
Your own home or your rellies sweet beach house - or even a country hall can all be useful if the acoustics are suitable.

Go Remote

Remote locations like by a river, on a hill or even on a boat provide more creative and visual options that are well-suited for creating videos for online marketing.

With the right choice of recording equipment, the options are truly limitless. Quality need not be compromised - even without access to power!

Neumann U87 & Beyerdynamic MC740

The absolute best equipment

I am fortunate to have unrestricted access to Bob Bickerton's BBSound equipment inventory. This includes the most impressive collection of professional studio microphones and recording equipment available locally. Equipment choices have been curated for their accuracy in reproducing or capturing acoustic sources.

Microphones

Microphones include critically acclaimed models from: Neumann, DPA, Beyerdynamic, AKG, Sennheiser, Electrovoice, Rode, Crowley and Tripp, Audix, Line6, Audio-Technica, and Shure.

The short version is that the highest quality of studio, location, and live stage microphones are not in short supply by any standards! Of course, the gear-heads can always go and read the serial numbers here if they so wish.

Recording devices

Multiple recording options exist to suit the scale of the task at hand. Digital consoles along with Logic or ProTools provide multitrack options of up to 32 channels with editing and overdubbing capabilities. Field recorders, while limited to 8 channels do not require an external power source so are ultimately portable.

Portable Recording Studio

While most location recording projects tend to be tracked live without edits, my post-production suite can travel to a location to create a fully fledged portable recording studio should the project require it.

Location Recording Examples

Tegen Fisher - Old Times
Recorded live in the Nelson Cathedral

Tegen was working with a videographer to create a live performance music video. While wanting to capture the essence of a single live take, budget constraints did not allow for multiple cameras, and for aesthetic reasons, the videographer did not want microphones to be visible.

To achieve the resulting video we captured an unedited take with the camera in close-up on Tegen's hands. Once happy with her performance, I packed up the microphones and left to mix the recording - leaving behind a quick bounce of the chosen take.

Subsequent wide angles were shot with Tegan playing along to the chosen take as a guide, and once the video was edited and audio mixed, the two were reintroduced and synced up.

Darren Middleton - Wither Hills Songs
Recorded in multi-track, in a container turned recording studio in a Wither Hills Winery block.

This project was certainly an interesting experience.

What may appear in the final edit to be common advertising trickery, was in-fact an intensive process to record 3 full-length songs written by the ex Powderfinger frontman Daren Middleton in response to his experience over a 'long-long weekend' at the Wither Hills winery.

Darren and accompanist Kelly Lane performed multiple layers of guitars, vocals, stomp-box, harmonies, violin, hand percussion, harmonica as well as a pitched wine glass! We tracked to a click so that the resulting session files could go back to Sydney where the songs were mixed with rhythm instruments added to some songs.
